Title chapter: Impediments to Participation: UGC and Professional Culture
Author: Tobias Olsson and Dino Viscovi
Keywords: user generated content, journalism, participation, professional values
Abstract: The chapter looks at how media professionals – news journalists – evaluate and appropriate user generated content (UGC) in online news environments. Drawing on insights offered by a cultural view of the journalistic profession, these data look into the core dimensions of journalistic values and opinions in order to make sense of the ways in which journalists appropriate UGC. The data presented in this chapter are derived from a digital survey conducted in the spring of 2012 which was answered by 601 Swedish news journalists, working in online publishing for newspapers, radio and television.
